Content:     I process through process, examining the bits of life that I would rather sweep under the rug through baths of chemicals in a red lit room. To make an image is to examine beyond surface, to hold a moment, an       object, a person still to dissect it, to look at it unflinchingly and for long enough to grasp at comprehension. However, there is something fleeting about a negative, something light in the hand and nearly immaterial, a fact that I have been unfulfilled by for some time now. At a point, a film negative and black and white processing slowly became not enough, the presence of my hand in the process began slipping away as my 4x5’s and 8x10’s no longer bore any scratches or dark corners, there were few surprises left on the purplish plastic surfaces and the meditation that I once found in the dark of my film processing room was replaced by a sense of monotony. To remedy this feeling of routine and near certainty of craft I chose to turn to the medium of wet plate collodion, an alternative process thats glass plate negative/positive satiates my hunger for the production of a very physical, tangible object fraught with imprecision and uncertainty. I have fallen in love with dripping emulsions, comets, collodion peels, and varnish islands, all part of the thrill that comes when the tungstens are turned on. In this, I aim to relinquish final control of the image to the image itself.       In the creation of the blank plates I have begun to hone in on what interests me: the surface of the plate and the visualisation of nothingness. Here, I am opening a conversation with the painters of New York School and their monumental, hyper-masculine, non-representational canvases. As a female artist, I feel that this is a special note, as my work has begun to feel to me like a reclamation of agency, a nod to the men that I have held in such high regard for so long and a sly whisper of ‘watch me’. I want to talk about the void, I want to explore what frightens me, I want to make large pieces, and I have an undeniable urge to push boundaries, ask questions, and break free from the expected presence of a representational image.      I’m now starting to understand that it is the combination of an entirely hands-on process, the creation of a very physical object in the form of a glass plate, my powerlessness in the final image, and the history of the process that culminate to form my immense reverence for the medium in which I am working and my interest in the images being produced.
